What is Lyme disease?
You've heard of this disease before, and chances are that you've even come close to contracting it. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that first appeared in 1975. It is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi.
The disease is also prevalent in Europe. It spreads to humans through the bites of infected ticks that are often hard to spot as they latch on unseen areas of the body.
Most Lyme disease patients don't even recall seeing a tick or feeling its bite. The infections happen in summer when high temperatures and ticks are active. An infected tick takes up to 2 days to spread the bacterium.
The disease rises as the climate warms. It increases with the rise in temperatures, as that is when ticks multiply and travel the most.
In the UK, about 1,500 cases of Lyme disease are confirmed annually. It is one of the most challenging conditions to diagnose as it usually mimics other chronic diseases such as chronic fatigue, mood disturbance, and fibromyalgia.

Symptoms of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is hard to diagnose. Its symptoms are changeable and often relate to other conditions. Many people rush to the hospital thinking they have the disease, only to realize it is something else.
Once infected, the first symptom a victim sees is a painless red or blue rash. The rash appears about one to two weeks after the bite and can grow as wide as 70cm. Other early symptoms include constant fever, headaches, fatigue, joint pains, and nausea.
However, not all patients experience the same symptoms. Some may have it light, while others will find that their symptoms flare up, causing discomfort.
The disease becomes weirder in its chronic stages. At this point, patients may experience neurological and psychological issues such as twitching, tingling, anxiety, depression, and rage. They may also experience insomnia and pain when passing urine.
If left untreated, patients may develop heart problems, migraines, neck stiffness, and immobility on one or both sides of the face. Months or years later, they may experience repeated episodes of swelling and joint pain, tingling in the arms and legs, and memory loss.
Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully within a few weeks using antibiotics. But this is only if the bacterium can be detected. Lyme disease is often invisible in the early stages.
